She made her mark on the international stage by winning a bronze medal at the 2004 Summer Olympics held in Athens, Greece, competing in the Half-lightweight category, which is set at fifty-two kilograms.

During the 2004 Olympics, Heylen showcased her skills by triumphing in her initial bouts against Naina Ravaoarisoa from Madagascar and Kazakhstan's Sholpan Kaliyeva. Although she faced a setback against Cuba's Amarilis Savón, the eventual bronze medal winner, she persevered and advanced to the repechage. There, she continued her winning streak, defeating Sanna Askelöf of Sweden and Georgina Singleton from Great Britain, ultimately securing her place on the podium by overcoming France's Annabelle Euranie in the bronze medal match.

Heylen's prowess in judo extended beyond the Olympics. In two thousand five, she claimed the title of European Champion in Rotterdam.
