Ilya Yashin, born on June twenty-ninth, nineteen eighty-three, is a prominent Russian opposition politician and human rights defender. He has played a significant role in the political landscape of Russia, leading the People's Freedom Party (PARNAS) from two thousand twelve to two thousand sixteen, and subsequently heading its Moscow branch. His political journey also includes serving as the head of the Moscow municipal district of Krasnoselsky and as the chairman of the Council of Deputies of the Krasnoselsky district from two thousand seventeen to two thousand twenty-one.
Yashin's activism began early in his career when he co-founded the civic youth movement Oborona in two thousand five, followed by the political movement Solidarnost in two thousand eight, where he remains a key leader. He was an active participant in the Dissenters' March and the widespread protests that occurred in Russia between two thousand eleven and two thousand thirteen. His commitment to opposition politics was further solidified when he was elected to the Russian Opposition Coordination Council in two thousand twelve.
In the wake of the Russian invasion of Ukraine in two thousand twenty-two, Yashin became a prominent figure among opposition politicians who had not fled the country, been imprisoned, or killed. His platform grew significantly during this period, making him a notable voice against government crackdowns. However, in June two thousand twenty-two, he was arrested and later charged under new war censorship laws for allegedly disseminating fake news about the Armed Forces. This led to a sentence of eight and a half years in prison in December two thousand twenty-two.
Yashin's resilience was evident when he was released in August two thousand twenty-four as part of a prisoner exchange in Ankara. However, his struggles continued, as on September eighth, two thousand twenty-five, the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Russia declared him a stateless person, marking a new chapter in his ongoing fight for human rights and political freedom in Russia.
