Imadaddin Nasimi

Seyid Ali Imadaddin Nasimi, commonly known as Nasimi, was a prominent Hurufi poet born around the year one thousand three hundred sixty-nine or seventy. He is celebrated as one of the greatest Turkic poets of the fourteenth and fifteenth centuries, making significant contributions to Azerbaijani literature through his poetry in Azerbaijani, Persian, and Arabic.

Nasimi's early education and deep interest in Sufism led him to embrace the Hurufism movement, which profoundly influenced his work. Following the execution of his teacher, Fazlallah Astarabadi, Nasimi ventured beyond Azerbaijan to propagate Hurufism in Anatolia and later in Aleppo. His efforts in Aleppo garnered him a following as a Hurufi sheikh, although he faced considerable opposition from Sunni factions.

Tragically, his religious beliefs ultimately led to his demise around the year one thousand four hundred eighteen or nineteen, when the Mamluk sultan ordered his execution. Nasimi was laid to rest in a Sufi lodge in Aleppo, leaving behind a legacy that would resonate through the ages.

His surviving works include two dīvāns, collections of poetry in Azerbaijani and Persian, alongside several poems in Arabic. Nasimi's poetry is characterized by its harmonious melodies and accessible language, often exploring complex religious themes and rich references to Islamic texts. His influence on Turkic literature is profound, inspiring future poets such as Habibi, Haqiqi, and Khatai.
