India

India, officially known as the Republic of India, is a vibrant country located in South Asia. It stands as the seventh-largest nation by area and has been recognized as the most populous country since 2023. Since gaining independence in 1947, India has proudly held the title of the world's most populous democracy. The country is bordered by the Indian Ocean to the south, the Arabian Sea to the southwest, and the Bay of Bengal to the southeast, sharing land borders with Pakistan, China, Nepal, Bhutan, Bangladesh, and Myanmar.

The history of human settlement in India dates back at least fifty-five thousand years, with early inhabitants primarily living as hunter-gatherers. The transition to settled life began around nine thousand years ago in the Indus River basin, leading to the emergence of the Indus Valley Civilization. By twelve hundred BCE, the diffusion of an archaic form of Sanskrit marked the early development of Hinduism, while the existing Dravidian languages began to recede in the northern regions. The evolution of caste within Hinduism and the rise of Buddhism and Jainism by four hundred BCE reflected significant social transformations.

Throughout the centuries, India witnessed the establishment of various religions, including Islam, Christianity, Judaism, and Zoroastrianism, particularly along its southern and western coasts. The Delhi Sultanate and the Mughal Empire played pivotal roles in shaping India's cultural and economic landscape, while the British East India Company's gradual control transformed the region into a colonial economy. The nationalist movement, characterized by nonviolent resistance, ultimately led to the end of British rule and the partition of the British Indian Empire in 1947, resulting in the creation of India and Pakistan.

Since becoming a federal republic in 1950, India has embraced a democratic parliamentary system, fostering a pluralistic, multilingual, and multi-ethnic society. The population surged from three hundred sixty-one million in 1951 to over one point four billion in 2023, accompanied by a significant increase in nominal per capita income and literacy rates. Despite its rapid economic growth and emergence as a hub for information technology, India grapples with socio-economic challenges, including gender inequality, child malnutrition, and environmental issues. The nation is also recognized for its rich biodiversity and wildlife conservation efforts.
