Ingenuus

Ingenuus, a prominent Roman military commander, served as the imperial legate in Pannonia during a tumultuous period in the Roman Empire. Appointed by Emperor Gallienus, he initially earned acclaim for his successful defense against a Sarmatian invasion, effectively securing the Pannonian border. His military prowess was further recognized when he was entrusted with the education of Gallienus' young son, Caesar Cornelius Licinius Valerianus.

However, the death of Valerian in the year two hundred fifty-eight marked a turning point in Ingenuus' fortunes. With the empire in disarray following Valerian's capture and execution by Shapur I of the Sassanid Empire, Ingenuus seized the opportunity to declare himself emperor. In the year two hundred sixty, the legions of Moesia, disillusioned with the current leadership, proclaimed him as their ruler at Sirmium.

As Ingenuus sought to solidify his claim to the throne, Gallienus was quick to respond. The emperor, stationed in Germania, mobilized his forces and swiftly marched to confront Ingenuus. The ensuing battle at Mursa saw Ingenuus' forces decisively defeated, largely due to the tactical advantage of Gallienus' cavalry, a military innovation that had been championed by the emperor himself.

Faced with the prospect of capture following his defeat, Ingenuus chose to end his life by drowning in a nearby river, a tragic conclusion to a brief but impactful chapter in Roman history.
