Ioannis Mitropoulos, born in 1874, was a prominent Greek artistic gymnast who made his mark in the world of sports during the inaugural modern Olympic Games held in Athens in 1896.
Competing in both individual and team events, Mitropoulos showcased his skills on the parallel bars and in the rings. His most notable achievement came in the rings event, where he earned Greece its first gold medal in gymnastics, a significant milestone in the nation's Olympic history.
While he did not secure a medal in the individual parallel bars event, his contributions to the team competition were noteworthy. As a member of the Ethnikos Gymnastikos Syllogos team, he helped secure a bronze medal, finishing third among the three competing teams.
