Irene Fernandez

Irene Fernandez, born on April eighteenth, nineteen forty-six, was a prominent Malaysian human rights defender and politician. As a co-founder and director of Tenaganita, a non-governmental organization dedicated to advocating for the rights of migrant workers and refugees in Malaysia, she played a crucial role in highlighting the plight of vulnerable populations.

In nineteen ninety-five, Fernandez published a groundbreaking report titled "Abuse, Torture and Dehumanised Conditions of Migrant Workers in Detention Centres." This report was informed by information from Steven Gan and a team of reporters from The Sun, who had uncovered alarming evidence of preventable diseases leading to the deaths of fifty-nine inmates, primarily from Bangladesh, in the Semenyih immigration detention camp.

Her courageous efforts to expose these injustices led to her arrest in nineteen ninety-six, where she faced charges of 'maliciously publishing false news.' After a protracted seven-year trial, she was convicted in two thousand three and sentenced to one year in prison. Despite her conviction, she continued to fight for justice, and her appeal at the High Court resumed in October two thousand eight. On November twenty-fourth, two thousand eight, her conviction was overturned, marking a significant victory in her long battle.

In recognition of her unwavering commitment to human rights, Irene Fernandez was awarded the Right Livelihood Award in two thousand five for her outstanding work against violence towards women and the exploitation of migrant and poor workers. Sadly, she passed away on March thirty-first, two thousand fourteen, due to heart failure, leaving behind a legacy of courage and advocacy.
