Irene Lekapene

Irene Lekapene, born in the year nine hundred and one, was a significant figure in Byzantine history as the Empress consort of Peter I of Bulgaria. She was the daughter of Christopher Lekapenos, who was the son and co-emperor of Romanos I Lekapenos, and his wife Augusta Sophia. This lineage placed her at the heart of the political machinations of her time, particularly during a period marked by conflict and negotiation between the Byzantine Empire and Bulgaria.

In May nine hundred and twenty-seven, Peter I, eager to establish his authority and prove himself as a worthy successor to his father, launched an invasion into Byzantine Thrace. However, he soon recognized the necessity of diplomacy and sought a more enduring peace. This pivotal moment was seized by Romanos, who proposed a marriage alliance between the imperial families of Byzantium and Bulgaria, aiming to conclude the ongoing War of nine hundred and thirteen to nine hundred and twenty-seven.

Romanos orchestrated a diplomatic marriage between his granddaughter Maria and the Bulgarian emperor, marking a historic first in Byzantine tradition, as a Byzantine princess was to wed a foreign ruler. This decision would later draw criticism from Romanos' son-in-law and co-ruler, Constantine VII, who viewed it as a significant concession. In October nine hundred and twenty-seven, Peter arrived near Constantinople to finalize the peace treaty, culminating in his marriage to Maria on November eighth. To symbolize the new era of Bulgaro-Byzantine relations, Maria was given the name Irene, which translates to 'peace.'
