His Olympic journey began in nineteen eighty-eight when he competed for the Yugoslav national team, helping secure a bronze medal at the Summer Olympics. During this tournament, he showcased his skills by playing five matches and scoring fourteen goals, marking a pivotal moment in his athletic career.
Eight years later, Smajlagić achieved even greater heights by winning a gold medal with the Croatian national team at the nineteen ninety-six Olympics. His performance was remarkable, as he played six matches and netted thirty-one goals, solidifying his legacy in handball history.
