Personal Facts, Age, Height and Biography of Irina Solovyova

Irina Solovyova, born on September sixth, nineteen thirty-seven, in Kireyevsk, Tula, Russia, is a retired Soviet cosmonaut and a pioneering explorer. She was one of the five women selected to join the Soviet Union's all-female space squad during the height of the Cold War. The initiative to launch the first female flight was proposed by Nikolai Kamanin in nineteen sixty-one, leading to the recruitment of female cosmonauts after an extensive selection process that saw over eight hundred women apply.

Solovyova's journey began when she was chosen from a pool of fifty-eight candidates to undergo advanced medical screening in Moscow. At the age of twenty-four, she accepted the offer to train at the Yuri Gagarin Cosmonaut Training Center in Star City, where she joined fellow trainees Zhanna Yorkina, Tatyana Kuzenetsova, Valentina Ponomareva, and Valentina Tereshkova. Although she served primarily as an alternate for Tereshkova, who became the first woman to fly in space aboard Vostok 6, Solovyova's contributions were vital to the advancement of female participation in space exploration.

Before her selection as a cosmonaut, Solovyova was an accomplished engineer with a degree from the Sverdlovsk Polytechnic Institute and a member of the national skydiving team. Her fiancé, Sergey Kiselev, was a skydiving instructor, and together they shared a passion for the skies. Solovyova was also a world champion member of the Soviet national parachutists, showcasing her exceptional skills in aerial sports.

Despite being selected for the opportunity to be the first woman to walk in space, the honor ultimately went to Svetlana Savitskaya. Nevertheless, Solovyova's legacy includes receiving the Belarusian Order For Service to the Motherland in the Armed Forces, third class. Today, she is married to Sergei A. Kiselyov and is a proud mother of two children, Aleksei and Yelena.
