Irnerius

Irnerius, born around the year 1050, emerged as a pivotal figure in the realm of law during the medieval period. Known as the 'lantern of the law' or lucerna juris, he played a crucial role in the revival of Roman legal traditions in Europe.

As a distinguished jurist, Irnerius founded the School of Glossators, which laid the groundwork for the systematic study of Roman law. His teachings at the University of Bologna, his hometown, focused on the newly rediscovered Corpus Juris Civilis, the legal code established by Emperor Justinian I.

The revival of Roman law in the 1070s marked a significant turning point in European cultural history. Irnerius' interlinear glosses on the Corpus Juris Civilis were instrumental in shaping a comprehensive and rational legal framework that would influence generations to come.
