Irom Sharmila Chanu

Irom Sharmila Chanu, born on March fourteenth, nineteen seventy-two, is a prominent Indian civil rights activist and poet hailing from the state of Manipur. Her journey as a peace activist began in the year two thousand when she initiated a hunger strike aimed at abolishing the Armed Forces (Special Powers) Act of nineteen fifty-eight, a law that has been widely criticized for its implications on human rights.

For over five hundred weeks, Irom endured an intermittent fast while being force-fed in custody, a testament to her unwavering commitment to her cause. Her struggle drew international attention, and she was recognized by Amnesty International as a prisoner of conscience, highlighting the severe human rights violations she sought to combat.
