Irving Chernev

Irving Chernev, born on January twenty-nine, nineteen hundred in Pryluky, Ukraine, was a distinguished American chess player and prolific author. Emigrating to the United States in nineteen oh five, he quickly established himself as a national master-strength player, dedicating his life to the game of chess. Chernev famously claimed to have read more about chess and played more games than any man in history, a testament to his deep passion for the sport.

His writing style was characterized by clarity, humor, and an effortless charm that belied the hard work behind it. Chernev's prose was conversational yet literate, setting a standard that contrasted sharply with the more casual tone prevalent in later chess literature. His commitment to quality is evident in the scarcity of typographical errors in his works, a rarity in his field.

Over his lifetime, Chernev authored twenty chess books, including notable titles such as Chessboard Magic!, The Bright Side of Chess, and Logical Chess: Move by Move, first published in nineteen fifty-seven. His collaboration with Kenneth Harkness on An Invitation to Chess became one of the most successful chess books ever, achieving sales in the six figures. Married to Selma Kulik, Chernev was a devoted family man and father to their son, Melvin Chernev. He passed away in San Francisco in nineteen eighty-one, leaving behind a legacy that continues to inspire chess enthusiasts around the world.
