Iryna Merleni, born on February 8, 1982, in Kamianets-Podilskyi, Khmelnytskyi Oblast, is a distinguished Ukrainian wrestler who made history by becoming the first female Olympic champion in women's wrestling. Competing in the – 48 kg weight class, she clinched the gold medal at the 2004 Summer Olympics, a remarkable achievement that showcased her exceptional talent and dedication to the sport.

Merleni's prowess on the mat continued to shine as she secured a bronze medal at the 2008 Summer Olympics. Her accolades extend beyond the Olympic stage; she is a three-time world champion and has also triumphed at the European Championships, further solidifying her legacy in the wrestling community.

In February 2006, Iryna married Andriy Mykulchyn, and together they are proud parents to two sons, Artur and Adam. In 2023, her contributions to women's wrestling were recognized with her induction into the Women's Wrestling Hall of Fame, a testament to her influence and success in the sport.

Following the Russian invasion of Ukraine, Merleni relocated to Haparanda, Sweden, where she currently works at the local Systembolaget. In addition to her professional commitments, she dedicates her spare time to coaching aspiring wrestlers at the Haparanda SKT club, sharing her expertise and passion for the sport with the next generation.
