Isaac Deutscher

Isaac Deutscher, born on April third, nineteen oh seven, was a prominent Polish Marxist writer, journalist, and political activist. He relocated to the United Kingdom prior to the onset of World War II, where he would make significant contributions to the understanding of Soviet politics and history.

Deutscher is best remembered for his scholarly biographies of two of the most influential figures in Soviet history: Leon Trotsky and Joseph Stalin. His three-volume work on Trotsky, often referred to as the 'Prophet' biography, has garnered widespread acclaim and is frequently cited as one of the greatest political biographies ever written. Despite the praise, some critics have noted his sympathetic portrayal of his subjects, particularly Trotsky.

His writings not only provided deep insights into the lives of these revolutionary leaders but also shaped the discourse around Soviet affairs during the mid-twentieth century. Deutscher's biography of Trotsky, in particular, became highly influential among the British New Left during the 1960s and 1970s, marking him as a key figure in the intellectual landscape of that era.
