Isabella I of Castile, born on April twenty-second, fourteen fifty-one, was a formidable ruler whose reign spanned from fourteen seventy-four until her death in fifteen hundred four. As Queen of Castile and León, and later Queen of Aragon alongside her husband, King Ferdinand II, she played a pivotal role in the dynastic unification of Spain. Together, they are celebrated as the Catholic Monarchs, marking a significant era in Spanish history.

Her marriage to Ferdinand in fourteen sixty-nine laid the groundwork for the unification of Spain. With his support, Isabella triumphed in the War of the Castilian Succession, solidifying her claim to the throne. Her reign was characterized by substantial reforms, including the reorganization of the governmental system, a reduction in crime rates, and the alleviation of the kingdom's debt inherited from her half-brother, King Henry IV.

Isabella and Ferdinand are recognized as the first monarchs to be referred to as the King and Queen of Spain. Their reign saw the completion of the Reconquista, the issuance of the Alhambra Decree which mandated the expulsion of Jews from Spain, and the initiation of the Spanish Inquisition.
