Isabella II

Personal Facts, Age, Height and Biography of Isabella II

Isabella II, born on October tenth, eighteen thirty, was a significant figure in Spanish history, reigning as Queen of Spain from eighteen thirty-three until her deposition in eighteen sixty-eight. She holds the distinction of being the only queen regnant in the history of unified Spain, a title that came with both privilege and peril.

The daughter of King Ferdinand VII and Queen Maria Christina, Isabella's path to the throne was paved by her father's Pragmatic Sanction, which allowed for her succession despite the prevailing Salic Law. Ascending to the throne just shy of her third birthday, her reign was immediately challenged by her uncle, Infante Carlos, igniting the Carlist Wars due to his refusal to accept a female sovereign.

Under the regency of her mother, Spain underwent a transformation from an absolute monarchy to a constitutional monarchy, adopting the Royal Statute of eighteen thirty-four and the Constitution of eighteen thirty-seven. In eighteen forty-three, Isabella was declared of age and began her personal rule, a period characterized by political intrigue, military conspiracies, and a tumultuous marriage to Francisco de Asís, Duke of Cádiz, which was marred by scandal and rumors of infidelity.

The turning point in her reign came in September eighteen sixty-eight, when a naval mutiny in Cádiz sparked the Glorious Revolution. Following the defeat of her forces by Marshal Francisco Serrano, Isabella fled to France, where she formally abdicated the throne in eighteen seventy in favor of her son, Alfonso. The subsequent restoration of the Bourbon monarchy in eighteen seventy-four saw Alfonso ascend as King Alfonso XII, while Isabella returned to Spain briefly before settling in France until her death in nineteen oh-four.
