Isaias Afwerki, born on February second, nineteen forty-six, is a prominent Eritrean politician who has held the position of president since Eritrea gained independence in nineteen ninety-three. He also serves as the chairman of the People's Front for Democracy and Justice (PFDJ), a role he has maintained since nineteen ninety-four.
His political journey began in nineteen sixty-six when he joined the Eritrean Liberation Front, quickly ascending to leadership by nineteen seventy. However, he later defected to establish the Eritrean People's Liberation Front (EPLF). Under his command, the EPLF achieved a significant victory on May twenty-four, nineteen ninety-one, effectively ending a thirty-year struggle for independence from Ethiopia. Two years later, he was elected as the first president of the newly established nation.
Despite his pivotal role in Eritrea's independence, Isaias Afwerki's leadership has drawn criticism from various scholars and human rights organizations. He is often described as a totalitarian leader, with reports indicating that Eritrea's constitution remains unenforced and electoral processes are virtually nonexistent. His government has been marked by a policy of mass conscription and numerous human rights violations, as highlighted by the United Nations and Amnesty International.
In twenty twenty-four, Reporters Without Borders ranked Eritrea last out of one hundred eighty countries in its Press Freedom Index, placing it below even North Korea. This ranking underscores the ongoing concerns regarding freedom of expression and human rights under his administration.
