Isidor Straus

Isidor Straus, born on February sixth, eighteen forty-five in Germany, was a prominent American politician and businessman. He immigrated to the United States with his family at the tender age of nine, eventually settling in Georgia. His early years were marked by the tumult of the American Civil War, during which he aligned himself with the Confederate States of America. Although he was unable to serve in the Confederate Army, he contributed to their efforts from England.

After the war, the Straus family relocated to New York City, where Isidor and his brother Nathan embarked on a successful business venture. They became co-owners of Macy's department store, a retail giant that would become a staple in American shopping culture. Isidor's entrepreneurial spirit and business acumen played a significant role in the store's growth and success.

In addition to his business endeavors, Isidor Straus also ventured into politics, serving for just over a year as a member of the United States House of Representatives, representing the state of New York. His contributions to both business and politics left a lasting impact on the communities he served.

Tragically, Isidor Straus's life came to a premature end during the sinking of the RMS Titanic. He perished alongside his beloved wife, Ida, who famously refused to leave the ship without him, showcasing their deep bond and commitment to one another.
