Ismaïl Omar Guelleh, born on 27 November 1947, is a prominent Djiboutian politician who has held the office of President since 1999. He succeeded his uncle, Hassan Gouled Aptidon, who had been in power since Djibouti's independence in 1977. Guelleh's ascent to the presidency marked a significant transition in the nation's leadership.
Throughout his tenure, Guelleh has been re-elected multiple times, specifically in the years two thousand five, two thousand eleven, two thousand sixteen, two thousand twenty-one, and two thousand twenty-six. However, these elections have often been marred by controversy, with widespread allegations of irregularities and significant opposition boycotts.
His leadership style has drawn criticism, with many labeling him a dictator. Human rights organizations and various foreign governments have expressed concerns regarding the state of democracy and human rights under his rule. Despite the criticisms, Guelleh remains a central figure in Djibouti's political landscape.
