Personal Facts, Age, Height and Biography of Ivan Asen III

Ivan Asen III, born around the year twelve fifty-nine, was a notable sovereign who ruled as tsar of Bulgaria from twelve seventy-nine to twelve eighty. He was the son of Mitso Asen and Maria of Bulgaria, the latter being a descendant of the prominent Ivan Asen II and Irene of Thessalonica. His reign, though brief, was marked by significant political maneuvering and challenges.

In a bid to counter the rising threat posed by Ivaylo of Bulgaria, Byzantine Emperor Michael VIII Palaiologos summoned Ivan Asen to his court. There, he was granted the title of despotēs and married to the emperor's eldest daughter, Irene Palaiologina, in either twelve seventy-seven or twelve seventy-eight. Despite the support from Byzantine forces, Ivan Asen III faced fierce resistance from Ivaylo, who managed to thwart several military attempts to secure Ivan's position on the Bulgarian throne.

In twelve seventy-nine, following a rumor of Ivaylo's demise, the local nobility in Tarnovo accepted Ivan Asen III as their emperor. To solidify his rule, he arranged a marriage between his sister Maria and the nobleman George Terter. However, Ivaylo's resurgence led to further conflict, and Ivan Asen III ultimately fled Tarnovo with Irene, taking valuable treasures from the palace.

Seeking refuge, the couple reached Mesembria and attempted to sail to Constantinople, where they faced the wrath of Michael VIII for their perceived cowardice. In twelve eighty or twelve eighty-one, Ivan Asen III sought support from the Golden Horde, competing against Ivaylo for restoration in Bulgaria. Although the Mongol chieftain Nogai Khan orchestrated Ivaylo's assassination, Ivan Asen III was unable to reclaim his throne and returned to his family possessions in the Troad, where he passed away in the year thirteen hundred and three.
