Ivan Dmitriev

Ivan Dmitriev, born on September tenth, seventeen sixty, was a prominent Russian statesman and a notable figure in the sentimentalist movement of Russian literature. His early life was marked by upheaval; following the revolt of Yemelyan Pugachev, his family fled their estate in Simbirsk to seek refuge in Saint Petersburg. There, Dmitriev was enrolled in the Semenov Guards school and subsequently began his military career.

Upon the ascension of Paul I, Dmitriev left the army with the rank of colonel. He briefly held the position of procurator for the senate before being appointed as a privy councillor. His most significant political role came during his tenure as minister of justice from eighteen ten to eighteen fourteen under Emperor Alexander I. After this period, he chose to retire from public life, dedicating himself to literature and the collection of books and art.

Dmitriev was a linguistic advocate, aligning himself with the ideas of Karamsin and opposing the Old Slavonic faction. His literary contributions include a diverse array of poems—songs, odes, satires, tales, and epistles—as well as fables inspired by La Fontaine, Florian, and Arnault, which solidified his reputation. Many of his lyrics gained popularity for their singable quality, and he is also known for a dramatico-epic poem about Yermak, the Cossack conqueror of Siberia.

His literary works were compiled into three volumes across the first five editions, with the sixth edition published in Saint Petersburg in eighteen twenty-three containing only two volumes. In the latter years of his life, Dmitriev focused on writing his memoirs, which were eventually published in Moscow in eighteen sixty-six.
