Ivan Vyrypaev

Ivan Vyrypaev, born on August third, nineteen seventy-four, is a distinguished Polish playwright of Russian descent, renowned for his multifaceted contributions as an actor, screenwriter, film director, and theatrical director. He stands as a pivotal figure in the New Drama movement, showcasing his artistic prowess through a diverse array of works that have captivated audiences worldwide.

As the founder and general producer of the WEDA PROJECT, a private Polish foundation, Vyrypaev has dedicated himself to fostering creative and spiritual development. He also serves as the Artistic Director and General Producer of the 'Teal House' foundation in Warsaw, further solidifying his commitment to the arts. His remarkable talent has earned him numerous accolades, including prestigious awards from the Venice Film Festival, Stuckemarkt International Contemporary Drama Festival, Warsaw Film Festival, and Rome Film Festival.

Vyrypaev's plays have been performed in over two hundred and fifty theaters globally, from South Korea to the United States, reflecting his international acclaim. His directorial ventures have similarly spanned across Europe and the United States, showcasing his versatility and vision. In two thousand nineteen, he was recognized as one of the top ten most prominent playwrights in the world.

In addition to his theatrical achievements, Vyrypaev is celebrated for his film work, particularly his film 'Euphoria,' which competed at the Venice Film Festival and won the 'small golden lion' award from the youth jury for best film. Since two thousand fourteen, he has resided in Poland with his wife, the esteemed Polish actress Karolina Gruszka.

Vyrypaev is also known for his strong stance against the Russian state, particularly following the full-scale invasion of Ukraine. His decision to donate all proceeds from his theatrical works staged in Russia to support Ukraine has led to significant repercussions, including a comprehensive ban and a criminal case against him. He was sentenced in absentia to eight years in prison for allegedly spreading false information about the Russian army, highlighting the risks he faces for his convictions.
