Iwan Thomas

Iwan Thomas, born on January fifth, nineteen seventy-four, is a distinguished Welsh sprinter who has made significant contributions to athletics. He represented Great Britain at the Olympic Games in the 400 metres and proudly donned the Welsh colors at the Commonwealth Games. His remarkable career is highlighted by his achievements as a former European, Commonwealth Games, and World 4 × 400 metres relay champion.

Thomas set the UK 400 m record with an impressive time of forty-four point thirty-six seconds in Birmingham on July thirteenth, nineteen ninety-seven. This record stood until it was surpassed by Matthew Hudson-Smith in May twenty-twenty-two. Additionally, he was part of the team that held the European 4 × 400 m relay record of two minutes fifty-six point sixty seconds, achieved during the Olympic final in Atlanta, USA, on August third, nineteen ninety-six, until it was broken at the twenty-twenty-four Summer Olympics.

Throughout much of his running career, Thomas was coached by Mike Smith, who also trained notable British 400 m athletes such as Roger Black and Kriss Akabusi. Sadly, Smith passed away in two thousand seventeen. In recognition of his outstanding contributions to athletics, Thomas was honored as a Member of the Order of the British Empire (MBE) in nineteen ninety-eight.
