Izmir Smajlaj

Izmir Smajlaj, born on March twenty-ninth, nineteen ninety-three, is a distinguished Albanian athlete renowned for his exceptional talent in the long jump. He made history in two thousand seventeen by clinching the gold medal at the European Athletics Indoor Championships held in Belgrade, marking a significant milestone as the first gold medal for Albania in a major athletics competition. During this event, he set a remarkable national and personal record of eight point zero eight metres.

Throughout his career, Smajlaj has consistently pushed the boundaries of his performance. His outdoor personal best stands at eight point one six metres, achieved in Tirana in two thousand twenty-one, which also established a new national record. He further demonstrated his prowess with an eight point one one metres jump in Shkodër in two thousand nineteen, and an impressive eight point zero eight metres indoors in two thousand seventeen.

In addition to his long jump achievements, Smajlaj has excelled in the triple jump, recording a personal best of sixteen point three zero metres outdoors in two thousand sixteen in Elbasan, Albania, and fifteen point one five metres indoors in two thousand fourteen in Tirana. These marks are recognized as current national records, showcasing his versatility and skill across multiple disciplines.

Despite facing challenges, including a controversy in two thousand twenty-three involving the Albanian Athletics Federation, Smajlaj was cleared of any wrongdoing related to the manipulation of his results that affected his placement at the Tokyo Olympics.
