Izumi Shikibu

Izumi Shikibu, born in the year nine hundred seventy-six, was a prominent poet and lady-in-waiting during the mid-Heian period of Japan. Renowned for her exceptional literary talent, she is celebrated as one of the Thirty-six Medieval Poetry Immortals, a prestigious group that highlights the most influential poets of her time. Her contemporaries included notable figures such as Murasaki Shikibu and Akazome Emon, with whom she shared the vibrant court of Empress Joto Mon'in.

Considered by many as the greatest woman poet of the Heian period, Izumi Shikibu's legacy is marked by a remarkable collection of two hundred forty-two poems and two kashu.
