J. Michael Miller

J. Michael Miller, born on July ninth, nineteen forty-six, is a distinguished Canadian retired bishop of the Catholic Church. He served as the Archbishop Emeritus of Vancouver from two thousand nine until two thousand twenty-five, having previously held the position of coadjutor archbishop. His extensive career also includes a significant role as Secretary of the Congregation for Catholic Education.

Raised in Ottawa, Miller completed his secondary education before entering the Basilian novitiate after his first year at St. Michael's College in Toronto. He was ordained a priest in nineteen seventy-five and later earned both a licentiate and a doctoral degree in dogmatic theology. His academic journey led him to the University of St. Thomas in Houston, where he became a professor and eventually the president in nineteen ninety-seven.

In two thousand two, Miller was appointed Secretary of the Congregation for Catholic Education, and he was consecrated as a bishop the following year. His leadership in the Archdiocese of Vancouver began with his appointment as coadjutor archbishop in two thousand seven, and he took on the role of archbishop two years later. During his tenure, he was instrumental in overseeing the construction of the archdiocese's new administrative headquarters and initiating its permanent diaconate program.

Miller's commitment to addressing historical issues within the church is evident in his appointment of a committee to examine clergy sex abuse in the archdiocese, resulting in a report that is considered a pioneering effort in Canada.
