His journey to the NBA began at Crestwood High School in Sumter, South Carolina, where he was recognized as the All-Region Most Valuable Player three times and earned All-State honors, despite being lightly recruited by NCAA Division I programs.

He made an immediate impact as a freshman, earning first-team all-conference honors in the Ohio Valley Conference (OVC).
