Jacinda Ardern

Jacinda Ardern, born on July 26, 1980, in Hamilton, New Zealand, is a prominent politician and activist who served as the 40th Prime Minister of New Zealand and the leader of the Labour Party from 2017 to 2023. Raised in Morrinsville and Murupara, she joined the Labour Party at the age of seventeen, demonstrating her commitment to social democracy and progressive values early on.

After graduating from the University of Waikato in 2001, Ardern began her political career as a researcher in the office of then-Prime Minister Helen Clark. Her international experience includes working as an adviser in the Cabinet Office during Tony Blair's premiership in London. In 2008, she was elected president of the International Union of Socialist Youth, marking her growing influence in global politics.

Ardern first entered Parliament as a list MP in 2008 and later won a by-election to represent the Mount Albert electorate in 2017. She quickly rose through the ranks, becoming deputy leader of the Labour Party in March 2017 and then its leader just five months later. Under her leadership, Labour gained significant support, leading to a coalition government with New Zealand First and the Green Party, with Ardern being sworn in as Prime Minister on October 26, 2017, at the age of thirty-seven, making her the youngest female head of government in the world.

During her tenure, Ardern faced numerous challenges, including the New Zealand housing crisis, child poverty, and social inequality. Her decisive response to the Christchurch mosque shootings in March 2019, which included the rapid introduction of strict gun laws, showcased her leadership. She also garnered international praise for her handling of the COVID-19 pandemic, successfully containing the virus in New Zealand.

Despite leading the Labour Party to a historic majority in the October 2020 general election, Ardern announced her resignation as Labour leader on January 19, 2023, citing a lack of energy to continue. She officially stepped down as Prime Minister three days later. Following her resignation, Ardern relocated to Sydney, Australia, with her family after spending several years in the United States and traveling internationally.
