Jack Kornfield, born on July sixteenth, nineteen forty-five, is a prominent American psychologist, writer, and teacher within the Vipassana movement of American Theravada Buddhism. His journey into the depths of mindfulness began with extensive training as a Buddhist monk across Thailand, Burma, and India, where he studied under revered masters such as Ajahn Chah and Mahasi Sayadaw.
Since nineteen seventy-four, Kornfield has been a pivotal figure in teaching mindfulness meditation globally. In nineteen seventy-five, he co-founded the Insight Meditation Society in Barre, Massachusetts, alongside fellow meditation pioneers Sharon Salzberg and Joseph Goldstein. This initiative marked a significant step in bringing Buddhist practices to the Western world.
In nineteen eighty-seven, he further expanded his vision by establishing the Spirit Rock Meditation Center in Woodacre, California. Kornfield's influence extends beyond teaching; he has actively engaged in peacemaking and activism, organizing teacher training programs and leading international gatherings of Buddhist teachers, including notable figures like the Dalai Lama.
