Jack Vance, born on August 28, 1916, was a prolific American writer renowned for his contributions to the realms of fantasy, science fiction, and mystery. His literary journey began with short stories published in science fiction magazines, which paved the way for his later success as a novelist. Vance's works, characterized by their imaginative storytelling and rich world-building, have been translated into multiple languages, including French, Dutch, Spanish, Russian, Italian, and German.

Throughout his illustrious career, Vance received numerous accolades that underscored his impact on the literary world. He was honored with the World Fantasy Award for Life Achievement in 1984 and was a Guest of Honor at the 1992 World Science Fiction Convention in Orlando, Florida. In 1997, he was named the fifteenth Grand Master by the Science Fiction and Fantasy Writers of America, and in 2001, he was inducted into the Science Fiction Hall of Fame as part of its sixth class.

Vance's most notable awards include the Hugo Awards for 'The Dragon Masters' in 1963 and 'The Last Castle' in 1967, as well as the Nebula Award in 1966 for the same work. His memoir, 'This Is Me, Jack Vance!', earned him a Hugo Award in 2010. Additionally, he received the Edgar Award in 1961 for his first mystery novel, 'The Man in the Cage', and the Jupiter Award in 1975, along with the World Fantasy Award in 1990 for 'Lyonesse: Madouc'.

In 2010, an Integral Edition of all Vance's works was published in forty-four volumes, followed by the release of 'The Complete Jack Vance' in six volumes. A profile in The New York Times Magazine in 2009 described him as 'one of American literature's most distinctive and undervalued voices'. Jack Vance passed away at the age of ninety-six in his home in Oakland, California, on May 26, 2013.
