Initially apprenticed to a goldsmith, Perkins quickly distinguished himself with a range of innovative mechanical inventions. His ingenuity led to the acquisition of twenty-one patents in America and nineteen in England, showcasing his prolific nature as an inventor.

Often referred to as the father of the refrigerator, Perkins's work laid the groundwork for modern refrigeration technology. His contributions to science and engineering were recognized when he was elected a Fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences in eighteen thirteen and became a member of the American Philosophical Society in eighteen nineteen.
