Jacob Zuma

Jacob Zuma, born on April 12, 1942, in Nkandla, KwaZulu-Natal, is a prominent South African politician who served as the country's president from 2009 to 2018. Known by his initials JZ and clan names Nxamalala and Msholozi, Zuma's political journey began at the young age of seventeen when he joined the African National Congress (ANC) in 1959. His early activism led to a decade-long imprisonment on Robben Island, where he was held as a political prisoner. Following his release, he went into exile in 1975, eventually rising to head the ANC's intelligence department.

Upon the ANC's unbanning in 1990, Zuma quickly ascended through the ranks of the party, becoming deputy secretary general in 1991, national chairperson in 1994, and deputy president in 1997. He served as deputy president of South Africa from 1999 until 2005, when he was dismissed by President Thabo Mbeki after corruption allegations surfaced. Despite these challenges, Zuma maintained a strong support base within the ANC, which enabled him to become the party's president in December 2007.

Zuma's presidency was marked by significant initiatives, including the launch of the R4-trillion National Infrastructure Plan and a controversial nuclear power deal with Russia. He advocated for radical economic transformation and implemented policies such as land expropriation without compensation and free higher education. His tenure also saw South Africa's admission to the BRICS grouping, a move celebrated as a diplomatic success.

However, Zuma's time in office was fraught with controversy, particularly during his second term. Allegations of state capture involving the Gupta family and the misuse of state funds for personal benefit led to widespread calls for his resignation. Ultimately, after a series of political challenges, he resigned on February 14, 2018. Following his resignation, Zuma faced renewed legal troubles, including corruption charges related to the 1999 Arms Deal and a contempt of court conviction, resulting in a 15-month prison sentence.
