Jacqueline Shumiatcher

Jacqueline Shumiatcher, born on April 29, 1923, was a prominent Canadian philanthropist and art collector whose passion for the arts significantly impacted the Regina, Saskatchewan community. After marrying her husband, Morris C. Shumiatcher, in 1955, the couple dedicated themselves to supporting local artists and the broader arts community.

Throughout her life, Jacqueline was particularly drawn to Inuit art and the works of local artists, amassing an impressive collection that reflected her deep appreciation for cultural expression. Following the passing of Morris in 2004, she continued their shared mission, ensuring that their legacy in the arts would endure.

In a remarkable act of generosity, Jacqueline donated over one thousand three hundred Inuit sculptures and paintings by the Regina Five to the University of Regina in 2014, a contribution valued at an estimated three million Canadian dollars. This donation not only enriched the university's collection but also highlighted her commitment to fostering artistic talent.

Jacqueline's contributions to the arts have been recognized through numerous accolades, including the Saskatchewan Order of Merit in 2001 and the prestigious Order of Canada in 2017, underscoring her influence and dedication to the cultural landscape of Canada.
