By the year seventeen eighty-eight, France faced a dire fiscal crisis exacerbated by the relentless accumulation of interest on the national debt. Necker was recalled to royal service, but his dismissal on July eleventh, seventeen eighty-nine, contributed to the unrest that led to the Storming of the Bastille. Remarkably, within two days, he was reinstated by both the king and the assembly, returning to France amidst a wave of public support.
