Jafar Panahi

Jafar Panahi, born on July 11, 1960, is a prominent Iranian filmmaker and actor renowned for his significant contributions to post-1979 Revolution Iranian cinema. His artistic vision is closely associated with the Iranian New Wave, and his films often explore the lives of women, children, and marginalized communities, providing a critical lens on the social, political, and gender dynamics of contemporary Iran.

Beginning his career as an assistant to the esteemed Abbas Kiarostami, Panahi made his mark with his debut feature, The White Balloon, in nineteen ninety-five, which won the prestigious Caméra d'Or at the Cannes Film Festival. This accolade marked a historic moment as it was the first major award for an Iranian film at this renowned event. Panahi's exceptional talent has earned him recognition at Europe's three major film festivals, where he is one of only four directors to have won the Palme d'Or at Cannes, the Golden Bear at Berlin, and the Golden Lion at Venice.

Despite his artistic success, Panahi's career has been fraught with challenges due to his conflicts with Iranian authorities. His third feature, The Circle, which highlights the plight of women in Iran, faced bans and censorship, leading to a six-year prison sentence and a twenty-year filmmaking ban in two thousand ten for alleged propaganda against the Islamic Republic. Undeterred, Panahi continued to create films clandestinely, with notable works such as This Is Not a Film, Closed Curtain, Taxi, and No Bears, which reflect on his experiences as an artist under state surveillance.

In addition to his filmmaking achievements, Panahi was honored with the Sakharov Prize for Freedom of Thought by the European Parliament in two thousand twelve, recognizing his unwavering defense of freedom of expression. His ongoing legal battles have continued to draw international attention, culminating in a recent in-absentia prison term in two thousand twenty-five.
