Jagmeet Singh

Jagmeet Singh, born on January second, nineteen seventy-nine, is a prominent Canadian lawyer and politician. He made history as the leader of the New Democratic Party (NDP) from two thousand seventeen to two thousand twenty-five and served as the Member of Parliament (MP) for Burnaby South from two thousand nineteen until two thousand twenty-five. Singh's political journey began in two thousand eleven when he was elected to the Legislative Assembly of Ontario, representing Bramalea—Gore—Malton.

After graduating from Osgoode Hall Law School, Singh established a law firm with his brother Gurratan, specializing in criminal defense. His political career took off when he contested the federal election in two thousand eleven, narrowly losing to Conservative candidate Bal Gosal. Later that year, he became a Member of Provincial Parliament (MPP) and rose to the position of deputy leader of the Ontario NDP in two thousand fifteen, serving under Andrea Horwath until his election as federal party leader.

On October first, two thousand seventeen, Singh was elected as the leader of the NDP, securing fifty-three point eight percent of the vote in the first round. This milestone made him the first person of a visible minority group to lead a major Canadian federal political party permanently. He is also recognized as the first turban-wearing Sikh to serve as a provincial legislator in Ontario, gaining attention for his distinctive fashion sense.

Under Singh's leadership, the NDP faced challenges in the federal elections of two thousand nineteen and two thousand twenty-one, losing seats and maintaining fourth party status. However, in two thousand twenty-two, the party signed a confidence and supply agreement with the governing Liberal Party, leading to significant healthcare initiatives. Unfortunately, in the two thousand twenty-five federal election, Singh led the NDP to its worst result in history, losing official party status and his own seat in Burnaby Central, prompting his resignation as party leader.
