Before his collegiate success, Brunson made a name for himself in high school basketball, leading Stevenson to the Illinois High School Association (IHSA) Class 4A championship. His exceptional skills earned him the title of Illinois Mr. Basketball, and he was recognized as the MVP of the 2015 FIBA Under-19 World Cup. He also participated in prestigious events such as the McDonald's All-American Boys Game, Jordan Brand Classic, and Nike Hoop Summit.

Brunson was selected as the thirty-third overall pick in the 2018 NBA draft by the Dallas Mavericks, where he spent his first four seasons.
