James Appathurai, born on August seventh, nineteen sixty-eight, is a distinguished Canadian diplomat and academic currently serving as the NATO Deputy Assistant Secretary General for Innovation, Hybrid and Cyber. His appointment to this pivotal role came in September twenty twenty-one, marking a significant milestone in his extensive career with NATO.

Since joining NATO in nineteen ninety-eight, Appathurai has held various influential positions, including serving as the organization's spokesperson from two thousand four to two thousand ten. His expertise in political affairs and security policy was further recognized when he was appointed Deputy Assistant Secretary General for Political Affairs and Security Policy from December twenty ten until April twenty twenty-two.

During his tenure, Appathurai also took on the role of Special Representative for the Caucasus and Central Asia, where he engaged in critical discussions with the Georgian government regarding potential NATO accession.
