James Bradley

James Bradley, born in March sixteen ninety-three, was a distinguished English astronomer and priest who made significant contributions to the field of astronomy. He served as the third Astronomer Royal starting in seventeen forty-two, a position that underscored his expertise and influence in the scientific community.

Bradley's most notable achievements include the discovery of the aberration of light between seventeen twenty-five and seventeen twenty-eight, as well as the nutation of the Earth's axis from seventeen twenty-eight to seventeen forty-eight. These groundbreaking discoveries were hailed as some of the most brilliant and useful of the century.

Jean Baptiste Joseph Delambre, a prominent historian of astronomy, recognized the importance of Bradley's work, stating that it was to these discoveries that modern astronomy owes its exactness. In his History of Astronomy in the Eighteenth Century, published in eighteen twenty-one, Delambre placed Bradley among the greatest astronomers of all time, alongside luminaries such as Hipparchus and Kepler.
