James Brander

James Brander, born on January first, nineteen fifty-three, is a distinguished Canadian economist and a respected professor specializing in Asia-Pacific International Trade at the University of British Columbia. His academic contributions have significantly shaped the field of international trade, making him a prominent figure in economic circles.

Brander is perhaps best known for his collaboration with Tracy R. Lewis on a groundbreaking article published in The American Economic Review in nineteen eighty-six. This seminal work, titled "Oligopoly and Financial Structure: The Limited Liability Effect," has been influential in understanding the dynamics of oligopolistic markets and their financial structures.

In addition to his work on oligopoly, Brander has made notable strides in international trade theory, particularly through his collaboration with Barbara Spencer. Together, they developed the Brander–Spencer model, which illustrates how government subsidies can enhance national welfare by supporting domestic firms in their competition against foreign markets.
