From nineteen sixty-eight to nineteen eighty-five, Scott made significant contributions to the understanding of agrarian politics in peninsular Malaysia. His research delved into the nuances of political resistance and the strategies employed by non-state societies to navigate and often evade state control. Over the years, his interests expanded to encompass a variety of topics, including the failures of state-led social transformation and the application of anarchist principles in everyday life.

Scott received his undergraduate degree from Williams College, followed by a Master’s and PhD in political science from Yale University. His academic career included a tenure at the University of Wisconsin–Madison until nineteen seventy-six, after which he joined Yale as the Sterling Professor of Political Science. In nineteen ninety-one, he took on the role of director of Yale's Program in Agrarian Studies.
