James Fraser Forbes was a prominent Canadian politician and medical professional, born in Gibraltar in the year 1820. He was the son of Anthony V.S. Forbes and dedicated much of his life to serving his community in various capacities. As a physician and surgeon, he not only provided medical care but also held significant roles such as surgeon to the local militia, coroner for Queen's County, and Health Officer for Liverpool.
Forbes's political career began when he was elected to the 1st Canadian Parliament as a member of the Anti-Confederation Party, representing the riding of Queens in Nova Scotia. His political journey saw a transformation when he became a Liberal on January 30, 1869, leading to his re-election in both the 2nd and 3rd Canadian Parliaments. Although he faced defeat in the year 1878, his resilience shone through as he was re-elected in 1882.
In addition to his political endeavors, Forbes was elected president of the Bank of Liverpool in 1874, showcasing his influence in both the financial and political spheres. His legacy continued through his family, with his son Francis Gordon also serving as a member of the House of Commons, while his daughter made her mark as a nursing sister during the Boer War.
James Fraser Forbes passed away in Lunenburg in the year 1887, leaving behind a rich legacy of public service and dedication to his community.
