James Gordon Bennett Jr.

James Gordon Bennett Jr. was born on May 10, 1841, and became a prominent figure in American publishing and journalism. As the publisher of the New York Herald, a newspaper founded by his father, James Gordon Bennett Sr., he carved out a legacy that would influence the media landscape of his time. To distinguish himself from his father, he was often referred to simply as Gordon Bennett.

He was instrumental in organizing the first polo match and the inaugural tennis match in the United States, showcasing his passion for sports. His adventurous spirit also led him to sponsor significant explorations, including Henry Morton Stanley's expedition to locate the famed explorer David Livingstone in Africa, as well as the ill-fated USS Jeannette mission to the North Pole.
