James Gould Cozzens

James Gould Cozzens, born on August nineteenth, nineteen oh three, was a distinguished American novelist, writer, and screenwriter. His literary career spanned over three decades, during which he garnered both popular success and critical acclaim. Cozzens is perhaps best known for his Pulitzer Prize-winning novel, Guard of Honor, published in nineteen forty-nine, which is regarded by many critics as one of the most significant narratives of World War II.

In nineteen fifty-seven, Cozzens received a nomination for another Pulitzer for his best-selling work, By Love Possessed, which later inspired a successful film adaptation in nineteen sixty-one. Despite the acclaim from culturally conservative critics, the novel sparked a fierce backlash from prominent literary figures, including Irving Howe and Dwight Macdonald, the latter of whom delivered a scathing review that has been described as one of the most impactful critiques of the century.

Throughout the latter part of his life and beyond, Cozzens' reputation suffered due to this criticism, overshadowing his contributions to American literature. However, recent efforts have emerged to revive his standing in the literary world. Critics like D.G. Myers have referred to him as “perhaps America’s best forgotten novelist,” while Joseph Epstein and Matthew J. Bruccoli have also contributed to the discourse surrounding his work.

In addition to literary scholarship, there has been renewed interest in adapting Cozzens' stories for the screen. Notably, in two thousand eighteen, it was reported that the rights to Sam Peckinpah's screenplay Castaway, based on one of Cozzens' novellas, were acquired by a producer, indicating a resurgence of interest in his narratives.
