James Henry Breasted

James Henry Breasted, born on August twenty-seventh, eighteen sixty-five, was a pioneering American archaeologist, Egyptologist, and historian. He made history as the first American to earn a doctorate in Egyptology from the University of Berlin in eighteen ninety-four. Shortly thereafter, he joined the faculty at the University of Chicago, where his academic journey would flourish.

In nineteen hundred and one, Breasted took on the role of director at the Haskell Oriental Museum at the University of Chicago, focusing his research on ancient Egypt. His dedication to the field was recognized in nineteen hundred and five when he was promoted to full professor, becoming the first to hold a chair in Egyptology and Oriental History in the United States.

Breasted was not only an academic but also a committed field researcher, actively exploring Egypt and the Levant. He was particularly passionate about documenting and interpreting ancient writings, driven by a sense of urgency to preserve knowledge that he feared might be lost to time.

In nineteen nineteen, he founded the Oriental Institute, which later became known as the Institute for the Study of Ancient Cultures, at the University of Chicago. This institution became a vital center for interdisciplinary studies of ancient civilizations. That same year, he was honored with election to the American Philosophical Society, further solidifying his legacy in the field of archaeology and history.
