James Ivory

James Ivory, born on June seventh, nineteen twenty-eight, is a distinguished American film director, screenwriter, and producer. He is best known for his pivotal role in Merchant Ivory Productions, a collaboration with Indian film producer Ismail Merchant and screenwriter Ruth Prawer Jhabvala. Together, they crafted a remarkable body of work that includes adaptations of literary classics by authors such as E.M. Forster and Henry James, celebrated for their elegance, sophistication, and rich character development.

Merchant–Ivory was founded in nineteen sixty-one in India, where they produced a series of modestly budgeted films, including The Householder in nineteen sixty-three, Shakespeare Wallah in nineteen sixty-five, and Bombay Talkie in nineteen seventy. Ivory's talent for adapting classic novels became evident with films like The Europeans in nineteen seventy-nine, Quartet in nineteen eighty-one, Heat and Dust in nineteen eighty-three, The Bostonians in nineteen eighty-four, Maurice in nineteen eighty-seven, and Mr. & Mrs. Bridge in nineteen ninety.

Throughout his illustrious career, Ivory received multiple nominations for the Academy Award for Best Director for his work on A Room with a View in nineteen eighty-five, Howards End in nineteen ninety-two, and The Remains of the Day in nineteen ninety-three. Remarkably, at the age of eighty-nine, he won the Academy Award for Best Adapted Screenplay for his contribution to Luca Guadagnino's Call Me by Your Name in two thousand seventeen, making him the oldest competitive Academy Award winner.

In addition to his Academy Award, Ivory's accolades include three BAFTAs and a Writers Guild of America Award, along with nominations for three Golden Globe Awards. He was honored with the Directors Guild of America Lifetime Achievement Award in nineteen ninety-five. More recently, he published his autobiography, Solid Ivory: Memoirs, in two thousand twenty-one, and directed the documentary A Cooler Climate in two thousand twenty-two.
