James Kidd Flemming

James Kidd Flemming, born on April twenty-seventh, eighteen sixty-eight, was a prominent figure in New Brunswick, Canada, known for his multifaceted career as a businessman, politician, lumberman, and teacher. Before venturing into the political arena, Flemming dedicated his early years to education and the lumber industry, laying a strong foundation for his future endeavors.

His political journey began in earnest when he served as Provincial Secretary-Treasurer from nineteen oh eight to nineteen eleven, followed by his role as Minister of Lands and Mines from nineteen eleven to nineteen fourteen. In nineteen eleven, he succeeded Douglas Hazen as Premier of New Brunswick, leading his party to an unprecedented electoral victory in the June nineteen twelve general election, where the Conservative Party secured forty-two out of forty-six seats.

Under Flemming's leadership, a significant milestone was achieved as the French language was introduced for the first time in the Legislative Assembly of New Brunswick. However, his tenure was marred by controversy; in nineteen fourteen, he was compelled to resign following allegations of fundraising irregularities brought to light by a faction of influential Liberals known as the 'Dark Lantern Brigade.'

Despite the challenges he faced, Flemming maintained his popularity and successfully won a seat in the House of Commons of Canada during the federal elections of nineteen twenty-five and nineteen twenty-six. He was also the president and director of the Flemming and Gibson lumber business in Juniper, New Brunswick, which his son, Hugh John Flemming, later took over, continuing the family legacy in both business and politics.

James Kidd Flemming battled poor health throughout much of his adult life and passed away in nineteen twenty-seven at the age of fifty-eight. He and his wife, Helena, rest in the family plot at the Methodist Church Cemetery in Woodstock, New Brunswick.
