James McHenry

James McHenry, born on November 16, 1753, was a prominent Scots-Irish American military surgeon and statesman who played a pivotal role in the founding of the United States. As a signer of the United States Constitution representing Maryland, he was instrumental in shaping the nation's early governance. His contributions extended beyond the Constitution; he was a key advocate for the establishment of the Navy, showcasing his commitment to national defense.

McHenry's political career was marked by his representation of Maryland in the Continental Congress and his participation in the Maryland State Convention of 1788, where he voted on the ratification of the proposed Constitution. His influence was further solidified when he served as the United States Secretary of War from 1796 to 1800, a role that bridged the administrations of two of the nation's founding presidents, George Washington and John Adams.
