Toney held numerous world championships, including the International Boxing Federation (IBF) and lineal middleweight titles from nineteen ninety-one to nineteen ninety-three, the IBF super middleweight title from nineteen ninety-three to nineteen ninety-four, and the IBF cruiserweight title in two thousand three.

Throughout his career, Toney was known for his defensive prowess, employing the shoulder roll technique taught by veteran trainer Bill Miller. He was an outstanding counterpuncher and an adept inside fighter, often preferring to engage from the ropes. His remarkable hand speed and respectable punching power contributed to his reputation, and he notably never lost any of his ninety-two professional bouts by stoppage.
